Bring the stroller for
  • Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center — Modern, flat, amazing park
  • National Garden — Shaded gravel paths, central, cool escape
  • Flisvos Marina — Modern waterfront, flat, restaurants
Use a carrier for
  • Acropolis and surroundings — Ancient stones, steep, steps
  • Plaka — Narrow cobblestone streets, tourist crowds
  • Sidewalks everywhere — Broken, blocked by motorcycles, or missing

Athens is a challenging city for strollers. Sidewalks are often broken, blocked by parked motorcycles, or simply non-existent. The Acropolis area is steep and has ancient stone paths. Summer heat is intense (40°C+). Metro lines 2 and 3 have lifts at every station, which helps enormously. Greek culture is incredibly warm toward children - taverna owners will hold your baby while you eat. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is a modern oasis of accessibility.

Best for families

Koukaki

Quiet, residential and right at the foot of the Acropolis, with local tavernas and Akropoli and Syngrou-Fix metro stations (both line 2, both with lifts). Where Athenian families actually live, and better value than Plaka.

Plaka / Monastiraki, Athens
Best location

Plaka / Monastiraki

Walk to the Acropolis, restaurants everywhere, Monastiraki and Syntagma metro close by. Rooftops with Acropolis views are magical at night. The lanes are cobbled and it can be noisy, so avoid ground-floor rooms on bar streets.

Family apartments in Athens

Athens apartments are good value and often come with a balcony. A kitchen makes baby food and bottles easy. Look for one with a lift and an Acropolis-view terrace for dinner after bedtime.

For sightseeing with a stroller, stay in Koukaki or Makrygianni near Akropoli metro (line 2 has lifts at every station). Skip the Athens Riviera unless you want beach first, city second; the tram gets you to the coast for a beach day.

Acropolis (with the carrier)Must-do

Acropolis (with the carrier)

Strollers aren't allowed on the Acropolis. Leave yours in the storage room by the first-aid station at the entrance and go up with the baby in the carrier. Book a timed slot and go at 8am opening, before the heat and the crowds. The lift is for visitors with reduced mobility (and a parent alone with two or more infants), arranged in advance.

Plaka & AnafiotikaFree

Plaka & Anafiotika

The old neighbourhood below the Acropolis: neoclassical houses, little squares and ice cream stops. Lower Plaka works with a stroller if you take it slowly; Anafiotika, higher up, is whitewashed steps instead of streets, so that part is carrier only.

Athens gets brutally hot in summer (35°C+). Do sightseeing early (8–11am) and late afternoon (after 5pm). Midday is for the National Garden's shade, the Acropolis Museum or a nap. Always carry water and a stroller sunshade.

Aegina: island day outFerry, 40–85 min from Piraeus

Aegina: island day out

The closest Saronic island to Athens. Fast boats take about 40 minutes, the bigger conventional ferries 70 to 85. Aegina town has a flat harbourfront with tavernas and pistachio everything, and a few beaches a short ride away.

Flat harbourfront; the big ferries are roomier with a stroller

Ferry fares vary by boat and seasonCheck availability
Lake VouliagmeniAbout 30–40 min by car

Lake Vouliagmeni

A brackish lake under a limestone cliff on the Athens Riviera, with sunbeds, a café and tiny fish that nibble toes (kids find it hilarious). It's an organised, paid site, so a calm half day with toilets and shade on hand.

Organised site with sunbeds; bring the carrier for the water’s edge

€17 weekdays, €19 weekends; under-6s free

Piraeus port is the last stop of metro line 1 (green) from Monastiraki. Ferries to Aegina run several times a day, more in summer. Pick a big conventional ferry if you want to keep the stroller open; on the fast boats you'll usually fold it.

Athens with a stroller: how to get around

Checked against STASY, OASA, museum and venue information in October 2026. Anything tagged “checking” we haven't confirmed first-hand yet.

Metro
Every station on lines 2 (red) and 3 (blue) has lifts, including Syntagma, Akropoli and Monastiraki. Line 1 (green, Piraeus to Kifissia) is the old line: accessibility upgrades are under way across its stations, so check yours before you rely on it.
Little ones ride free
Under-6s travel free. A €1.20 ticket covers 90 minutes on metro, bus, tram and trolleybus; a 24-hour ticket is €4.10. You can also tap a contactless card at the gates.
Acropolis
Strollers are not allowed on the Acropolis. There is a storage room by the first-aid station at the entrance; bring the carrier for the climb.
From the airport
Metro line 3 runs about every 36 minutes and takes around 40 minutes to Syntagma (€9 one way, under-6s free). Taxis don’t carry child seats, so pre-book a transfer with one if you need it.
Tram to the coastchecking
Tram line 6 runs from Syntagma to Pikrodafni on the coast, handy for a beach afternoon. The trams are modern and low-floor.
Pavements and heat
Pavements are narrow, broken in places and often blocked by parked motorbikes: bigger wheels help and the carrier is a good backup. From June to September, plan outdoor time before 11am and after 5pm.
