Planning your trip?

Here's what worked for other parents in Barcelona

Bring the stroller for
  • Barceloneta Beach — Flat boardwalk, wide promenade
  • Eixample — Grid layout, wide sidewalks, predictable
  • Port Vell / Maremagnum — Waterfront, modern, accessible
Use a carrier for
  • Gothic Quarter — Medieval maze, narrow and crowded
  • Park Güell — Beautiful but steep and tiring
  • La Boqueria Market — Packed, no space to maneuver

Barcelona's wide boulevards and beach promenades are excellent for strollers. The metro has lifts at 156 of its 165 stations, and every city bus has spaces for strollers. The main challenges are the narrow medieval streets of the Gothic Quarter and the hills in Gràcia and Park Güell areas. Spanish culture is very family-friendly and you'll find people eager to help.

Family apartments in Barcelona

Kitchen, washing machine, space to spread out. Eixample apartments often have balconies, great for an early bedtime while you have a glass of wine outside. Check for a lift before you book.

Avoid staying in the Gothic Quarter: charming, but narrow streets, old buildings without lifts and noisy nights. The Eixample is the sweet spot: walkable to everything, wide pavements, and much more practical with a stroller.

Gaudí's basilica is the one to book ahead: timed tickets sell out in summer. Inside, the whole basilica is accessible (use entrance B on Carrer de la Marina), and the light through the stained glass is lovely even for a baby. The towers are a different story: no strollers, and no children under 6. The new Tower of Jesus Christ was inaugurated in June 2026.

On the ground

Barcelona with a stroller: how to get around

Checked against TMB, Aerobús, the city council and venue information in October 2026.

Metro lifts
Lifts at 156 of 165 metro stations. Use them: on escalators the rule is to fold the stroller and carry the baby.
Buses
All city buses have two spaces for wheelchairs and strollers. The official rule is to fold the stroller; an open one can go in the wheelchair space if it is free, with the brake on.
Fares
Children under 4 travel free on metro and buses. A T-casual (10 trips) costs €13.
From the airport
The Aerobús has a space for strollers and big luggage, and under-4s ride free. The L9 Sud metro also serves both terminals with a special €5.90 airport ticket. Taxis don’t have to carry child seats on city trips, so pre-book a transfer if you want one.
La Rambla
La Rambla is being rebuilt, with works planned to finish in early 2027. With a stroller, the parallel streets or Passeig de Gràcia are easier.
Hills and beaches
The Eixample and the seafront are flat; Montjuïc, upper Gràcia and Park Güell are steep. Use the Montjuïc funicular and cable car, and the beach walkways where you find them.
