Here's what worked for other parents in Aarhus

Bring the stroller for
  • Dokk1 library area — Modern, flat, harbour views, indoor and outdoor play areas
  • Tangkrogen — Park by the water with a shallow, sandy-bottomed beach
  • Botanical Garden — Greenhouses and a big playground with water play and a carousel
Use a carrier for
  • Latin Quarter — Older streets, some cobblestones
  • Riis Skov forest — Hilly woodland paths
  • Den Gamle By — Some cobblestone sections (historic)

Aarhus is like a smaller, calmer Copenhagen. The centre and harbourfront are compact and mostly flat, with hills in the forests to the north and south. ARoS has lifts up to its rooftop rainbow, the harbourfront library Dokk1 has free indoor and outdoor play areas, and under-18s get in free at the city's museums. Den Gamle By, the open-air old town, is wonderful but cobbled, so bring big wheels or a carrier. The redeveloped harbour has wide, flat promenades, and from April to October the Infinite Bridge stands out over the bay at Varna beach.

Where to stay

Where to stay in Aarhus with a stroller

In Aarhus, where you sleep decides how much you walk. Pick an area, then filter for a lift and family rooms.

City centre and the Latin Quarter, Aarhus
Best location

City centre and the Latin Quarter

Walking distance to ARoS, Den Gamle By, the river and the harbour. The Latin Quarter's lanes are cobbled and charming; if you'll push a stroller every day, a hotel near the station or the harbourfront keeps you off the cobbles.

Aarhus Ø (harbour island), Aarhus
Modern and flat

Aarhus Ø (harbour island)

The new harbour district: wide, flat promenades, the harbour bath and newer buildings, which usually have lifts. Dokk1 and the Letbane are a short walk back towards the centre.

Family apartments in Aarhus

A kitchen and a separate bedroom make early bedtimes easier. Check for a lift before you book.

Aarhus is compact: from the centre you can walk to most sights, and the Letbane runs along the harbour. For daily stroller pushing, the flat harbourfront and the streets around the station are easier than the cobbled lanes of the Latin Quarter.

A whole old town of real historic houses, shops and workshops, with costumed staff, horse-drawn carriage rides and a toy museum. Under-18s get in free and you can bring a packed lunch. From 14 November to 31 December it turns into a Christmas town with a play loft for kids (Nisseloftet). The Botanical Garden next door has a big playground with water play and a carousel.

Dokk1 library and the Kloden playground

The harbourfront library won the world's Public Library of the Year award in 2016. Inside there are play areas, games and dressing-up costumes for little ones; outside on the deck, the free Kloden playground has five continent-themed zones, including a small dragon slide for younger children. Right on the Letbane line.

Marselisborg Deer ParkFree

Marselisborg Deer Park

Sika and fallow deer wander freely in a forest park south of the centre; the wild boar have their own enclosure. It's free and open from sunrise to sunset. Please don't feed the animals: the park asks visitors not to, and the keepers give them extra food on weekday mornings. Toilets at the Krudthuset building.

Well-kept paths, but the park is hilly

Moesgaard Museum

The archaeology museum south of the city, famous for the Grauballe Man and its sloping grass roof (you can walk on the roof without a ticket). City bus 18 runs there from the centre in about 25 minutes. Under-18s are free.

The Infinite Bridge (April to October)Seasonal

The Infinite Bridge (April to October)

A circular wooden pier out over the bay at Varna beach, south of the centre. It's rebuilt every April and taken down again in October, so it's a spring-to-autumn sight. Free, open around the clock in summer. Tangkrogen, closer to town, has shallow water and a sandy bottom for little feet.

Beachside paths; we could not confirm step-free access onto the bridge

Tivoli Friheden

Aarhus's own small amusement park by the forest. It isn't open all year: in 2026 there's Halloween in October and a Christmas season on selected days from 14 November to the end of December, with most rides running. Go in daylight with little ones; the evening Halloween scares are for older kids.

Check the calendar on friheden.dk before you go

Adults DKK 180, ages 3–7 DKK 90, under-3s free; ride pass DKK 120Check availability

Under-18s get in free at the city's museums, including ARoS, Den Gamle By and Moesgaard, so a museum morning costs only the grown-ups' tickets. On a wet day, Dokk1 is free and has indoor play areas.
