Savannah, United States — stroller-friendliness guide for parents

United States · Updated October 2026

Is Savannah stroller-friendly?

It depends—bring both.

Yes, mostly: Savannah's grid of 22 shady squares is flat and made for slow strolling, but River Street's cobbles and the steep old stairs down to it call for the carrier.

Here's what worked for other parents in Savannah

Bring the stroller for
  • Forsyth Park — 30 acres of wide paved paths, lawns and the famous fountain
  • Bull Street squares — flat, shady and full of benches all the way from City Hall to Forsyth Park
  • Savannah Belles Ferry — a free, ADA-accessible boat ride across the river
Use a carrier for
  • River Street — old stone-block paving along the whole riverfront
  • Factors Walk and the river stairs — steep steps and narrow walkways on the bluff
  • Older sidewalks in the residential squares — brick lifted by oak roots

The Historic District is about a mile square and almost completely flat, and walking from square to square under the live oaks down to Forsyth Park is the best thing to do here with a stroller. Older sidewalks are brick, and tree roots lift them in places, so bigger wheels help. The exception is the riverfront: River Street sits about 40 feet below Bay Street, paved with old stone blocks, and the shortcuts down are steep stone stairs. Plan to use a ramp or switch to the carrier there. The free DOT shuttle and the free river ferry are both ADA-accessible, which makes tired-legs days easy. Summers are hot and sticky, so walk early and late.

River Street & the riverfront

Shops, candy stores and river views along the old cotton warehouses. Big ships passing are a hit with small kids. The street is paved with old stone blocks and sits below a bluff, so come down by a ramp, not the stairs.

Beyond the city

Easy day trips

Tybee Island

Tybee Island

Savannah's beach, 18 miles east along Highway 80: a long sandy shore, a pier and a laid-back beach town. Dogs and glass are banned on the beach. In high summer, go early for parking.

30 min drive

Fort Pulaski National Monument

A big brick Civil War fort with a moat, on the road to Tybee. Kids love the cannons and tunnels, and there are walking trails with marsh views. Easy to combine with a beach afternoon.

25 min drive

There's no easy public transport to Tybee with a baby, so plan on a car (bring your own car seat if you're using rideshares). Leave early on summer weekends to beat the traffic on Highway 80.
